How it all began

Meet Franklin Loufrani, a young journalist who ditched college to join a newspaper at 19. In 1971, tired of negative news, he came up with a genius idea: a smiling yellow face to highlight positive stories.nThis simple smiley stayed cool through 50 years of cultural trends, from free love to raves to the digital age. With help from his son Nicolas and their awesome Smiley team, Franklin's smiley became an icon.
